Who Am I?

Born and bred in Dublin, I studied Design for Film - Modelmaking at the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.I've always taken an interest in miniatures and monster design, something that is probably very evident from my work.I've worked as a modelmaker for various student productions and at the Abbey Theatre for their production of 'Youth's The Season'Some of the skills which I have include:

  • Filament and Resin 3D Printing

  • Digital and Traditional Sculpting

  • Fiberglass Mould Making

  • Silicone and Latex Casting

  • Laser Engraving and Cutting

Mole-Man Latex Mask

This is a mask from a clay sculpt, created by applying several layers of liquid latex over a plaster cast of the sculpture.Once cured, the latex was peeled away, resulting in a flexible and detailed mask that captures the intricacies of the original sculpture. The teeth were pieces of hard foam that were carved and painted to look like teethThe design of the mask was based off that of a naked mole-rat with its features distorted to give it a human-like quality.

WWE Style Belt

The belt was apart of a large wrestling production "Stand By Wrestling" and was a prop to be held by the title holder. The base of the belt itself was black faux leather, while the main golden parts of the belt themselves were first drawn in Photoshop then converted to a 3D model and printed. The belt was attached with Velcro strips and an eyelet puncher was used to add holes to the belt.

Silicone Puppetry

One of the most complex projects I've worked on, this silicone puppet was a few weeks long process, a full silicone puppet with basic arm movements, allowing it to play an accordion. The character plays the role of an alien street-side busker, who lives on a destitute planet.

The accordion itself was a 3D model that was printed, painted separately then attached together, the bellows of the accordion was a piece of flexible ducting hose that was painted black.
The design of the accordion was inspired by Laotian bomb art, the art of turning left over war material into sculptures or furniture; the accordion itself was based off rusted landmines.

The head, arms and legs of the puppet were sculpted from air-drying clay based off a ZBrush sculpt and then using fiberglass and resin, I created two-part moulds for each body part. Using each of these moulds, I casted the parts in Eco-flex liquid silicone. The body of the puppet itself was made out of a light-weight PVC foam, the shoulder joints were designed by myself using Blender and 3D printed, and allowed for basic shoulder movement.

ZBrush Creature Busts

As a way to learn digital sculpting in ZBrush, I tried my hand at creating busts of a few creatures. I've always had a fascination with folklore, taking inspiration from the various folkloric creatures from around the world.

As a way to test out resin 3D printing using a AnyCubic Photon Mono M5, I sculpted my take on a goblin.

U-Boat Miniature

As a part of a short film based on the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 by the Imperial German navy, I was tasked with creating a scale miniature of the 'SM U-20' German submarine. The project involved in depth historical research into the design of the 'U-Boat'. The miniature was made up of the laser cut wooden pieces which were based off of the blueprints of the actual 'SM U-20'.

The miniature was filmed on a green screen set and then digitally inserted into an underwater VFX environment. The deck of the U-Boat was separate from the hull, which was made of foam, allowing us to film scenes where the full submarine is shown underwater and where it has emerged from the water.
